More patients treated and fewer resources used
Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University hospitals in the NHS trust in Liverpool, UK, have two hospital sites with a total of 19 operating rooms. The busy operating rooms – or theatres as they are called in the UK – aim to treat patients as quickly as possible without compromising on quality. “Theatre efficiency is very important,” says John Davidson, Clinical Director Orthopaedics. “We identified early on that one of the challenges was reducing theatre time.”
And they did. With lean care principles, John Davidson and his team managed quite well in their mission to enhance operating room efficiency.
“We use lean principles to increase theatre throughput and have increased the number of patients treated by about 40 percent over the last two years,” says John Davidson. “ProcedurePak has had a significant improvement on theatre turnaround, so we are not waiting around for an operation to start.”
