Hospitals reduce carbon emissions and waste with ProcedurePak®

By: Mölnlycke Health Care, May 2 2012Posted in: O.R. Efficiency

By implementing Mölnlycke Health Care custom procedure trays, ProcedurePak®, hospitals can make significant carbon efficiency savings. This was shown in a collaborative project between Mölnlycke Health Care and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust in the UK. Mölnlycke Healthcare UK reached the final stage in the 'Suppliers Deliver Sustainability' category in the 2010 Department of Health (DH) Community Partnership Awards.

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals (RLBUH) initially implemented ProcedurePak® custom procedure trays as it recognised the economic and time saving benefits of one pack containing everything needed for surgery. However, by collecting extensive data on consumption, theatre utilisation and waste they also found significant savings in the volume of waste for disposal.

The sustainability analysis identified significant savings in both carbon footprint and pack weight. By implementing ProcedurePak® custom procedure trays there is a total weight saving of 50 percent and a carbon footprint reduction of 0.39 kilograms of CO2 per customised procedure pack used during a common anterior cruciate ligament repair*. Using this specific procedure as an example, RLBUH are saving 33 kilograms of waste and 66 kilograms of CO2 emissions every year by using ProcedurePak®.

Lisa Tierney, Theatre Matron, The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust comments: "This award recognises the important role ProcedurePak® custom procedure trays can play in helping hospitals to significantly reduce carbon emissions. We hope that other hospitals will now be able to benefit from improved sustainability and operational efficiencies as we have at RLBUH."
