Pressure injury prevention
Pressure injury prevention - The problem
Hospital-acquired pressure injuries occur most commonly in the ICU (12- 42%)1, with the rate of interoperatively acquired pressure injuries ranging from 12% to 66% in surgical patients. These pressure injuries are caused by intense, prolonged and unrelieved pressure, resulting in damage to skin and underlying tissue2.
The sacrum is generally reported as the most common location for pressure injuries, with an incidence rate in acute care settings of 31%.3 The heel is typically reported as the second most common location4,5. Medical device related pressure injuries are a growing concern6.
