Through the Operation Smile Volunteer Program, our employees can join Operation Smile medical missions and help restore smiles in different parts of the world. For several days, our volunteers form part of the Operation Smile team, assisting with different tasks on the mission.

Mission to Guatemala

Two of our employees, Mats Ekström (Sweden) and Sarah Launer (Australia) were recently part of a 70-strong team who helped 100 children on an Operation Smile mission to Guatemala.

Sarah and Mats' mission began with screening to prioritise who should receive the operation, followed by several days of surgery conducted by the medical volunteers. Over the ten days, the pair experienced a rollercoaster of emotions. Sarah commented: "To see so many children with cleft lips and palates in one place was heart-breaking. I could not get over how much these children must have suffered over their short lives. By the end, I was full of hope as I realised that these children would have a bright and positive future because of Operation Smile."

During the mission, Mats and Sarah found themselves helping the medical team in any way they could from filing medical records to unpacking medical supplies and keeping the children’s nerves at bay by entertaining them. "The more you pitch in, the more you get out of it. You have to be open to anything," said Mats. Sarah agrees: "The work we did was very different from what we do at Mölnlycke Health Care. But we really took the load off the medical volunteers. We knew we were making a difference."

Although the pair had never met before arriving in Guatemala, they found they had a lot in common as Mölnlycke Health Care employees. Mats summed it up: "We both have immense belief in our products, we know that they improve people’s lives. We both have a commitment and drive to help people. And we both feel very proud to work for a company that supports Operation Smile in so many ways."
